The year: 1990. Upon being introduced to the cooperative story in high school composition, three young, highly imaginative lads by the names of Ben, Gordon, and John, all Star Trek nerds who shared a love of goofing off in class and SNL characters embarked on an epic literary endeavor that would forever change their lives. Thus began the saga of Lame Trek.
Cut to the present. I wrote the above introduction to the Lame Trek collection in 2005 for the first version of the Tower. I had to keep it short due to the limited real estate on the main pages of that site. I can go into a bit more detail now.
As has been told elsewhere, most of our cooperative story effort were begun by Gordon and myself in the early morning hours before school began or in the late afternoon while we were both waiting to go home. One of the earliest of these was Revolt on the Benterprise. However, Lame Trek does not truly have its origin in this first short story. Gordon alludes to this in his commentary for RotB when he mentions the sketches drawn by fellow author Ben Avery and me in chemistry class.
The sketches were part of a short comic, and contained the first appearances anywhere of "Captain Benjamin T. Avery" and his starship, the U.S.S. Benterprise. And, as Gordon also recalls, this was where I first thought of the concept of placing our captains astride their stately vessels. Sadly, these origins of the Lame Trek Universe have long since been lost to time, and live on only in memory.
While it is technically true that Lame Trek's younger cousin Lord of the String is our longest cooperative effort to date, I do have to give this collection a nod for having the most material altogether. It certainly spans the longest amount of time-- as of this writing, the over-arcing Lame Trek saga is still ongoing and has been growing for over sixteen years.
