I mentioned in my review for RinkWorks that I befriended many of the "regulars" in the reader community there. It was through one of my friends there that I first learned of Sluggy Freelance. "Kiki" had even taken her screen name from one of the characters in this off-the-wall, drily humorous webcomic.
The Kiki of Sluggy Freelance is a hyperactive talking ferret, and is the perfect foil for Bun-Bun, the mean-spirited, violent talking mini-lop rabbit who carries a switchblade, steals candy from the neighborhood kids every Halloween, and tries to murder Santa Claus every chance he gets.
Sluggy Freelance is the creation of Pete Abrams and takes place, for the most part, in his native New Jersey. One of the oldest webcomics still going strong today, Sluggy premiered on August 25, 1997 and quickly established its reputation for quirky humor. By no mean is it all talking animals, although they do play a major role. Torg, Riff, Zoe and Gwynn form the main cast along with Kiki and Bun-Bun. The list of minor, recurring, and one-off characters is almost ten years long and still growing.
I discovered Sluggy in the spring of 2000, and it took me about a year to wade through the three years of archives. If you start at the beginning now, you should be caught up with the current storyline by about this time in 2010.
